Either Jerry Millen Is Stupid, Or He Thinks You Are

The ability to look at someone with a straight face and say a bunch of stuff that is so demonstrably untrue as to be laughable is a special kind of gift. Either you have it or you don’t. Jerry Millen has it. Watch this interview that he did with The Garv and see if your head doesn’t hurt by the time it’s all over. Over the course of six minutes Millen attempts to portray the UFC as a greedy, money-hungry organization in opposition to the Robin Hoods of MMA, M-1 Global and Fedor Emelianenko. Several times he criticizes the UFC for not pursuing what he acknowledges would be a bad business plan for them, at one point saying, “If you really care what the fans want, how much money do you need?”

The irony here is that this is the same criticism that’s been leveled against Fedor and his M-1 cronies. They wouldn’t accept a deal with the UFC because, essentially, the money/offer wasn’t good enough. Which means, by Millen’s logic, that they don’t care what the fans want either.

And in a way, that’s understandable. This is a business and they’re in it to make money, not become popular with a bunch of people they’ll probably never meet. But the same is true for the UFC. Millen seems to think that Dana White and co. have made enough money already and should now commit themselves to some kind of bizarre MMA philanthropy. I’m sure it’s purely coincidental that in this case, the beneficiaries of that generosity would include Millen himself.

But maybe it’s a non-issue, because Millen would have us believe that he “won’t work with a person like [Dana White].” Of course, he says this after the company he works for made a failed attempt to work with Dana White. He also tries to get us to believe that Fedor would “fight Brock Lesnar in this gym right now, probably for free.” This, despite the fact that Fedor has already turned down the offer to fight Lesnar for a bunch of money. So maybe the UFC’s mistake was in not amending their original offer to include a gym and zero dollars?

The amazing thing about Millen is not that he says this stuff into a camera, but that he presumably believes that anyone is buying it. He must think the MMA world is full of idiots, otherwise there wouldn’t be any point in telling lies that are so easily exposed. If he had any respect for our intelligence, he would at least take the time to come up with more plausible lies.
