10 Questions With Georgi Karakhanyan (by Darrick Patrick)
Georgi "Insane" Karakhanyan is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as King Of The Cage, Gladiator Challenge, Call To Arms, Missouri Total Fighting, Apocalypse Fights, True Fight Fans, World Cage Fighting Organization, Extreme Fighters World Championships, and Galaxy Productions. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match may be against Vince Ortiz at Called Out MMA 2 on January 24th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Georgi: I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006 and got submitted every single minute, so I told myself that I have to get better at this! After six months of training BJJ, I took a fight with King Of The Cage and won that match by guillotine. I loved the feeling and the pressure, so I decided to become a professional fighter.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Georgi: I have a lot of respect for my coaches, Romie Aram (former King Of The Cage champion and UFC veteran), Betiss Mansouri (King Of The Cage champ, BJJ Black Belt), and Joey Pagliuso (pro Muay Thai fighter). They have put a lot of their time into me to train me and show me new tricks.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Georgi: I've said this before and I'll tell it again now. If you want to do this to get girls or wear TapouT shirts, then forget it! It takes a lot of commitment and hard work to be a mixed martial arts fighter. You really need to love this sport. It's not for everyone.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is possibly against Vince Ortiz on January 24th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Georgi: To be honest with you, I'm not sure if that show will happen or not. If it does - great! As for my opponent Vince, I have a lot of respect for him and his camp. The guy is an ex-marine and a good wrestler. I have nothing bad to say about him.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Georgi: Training and learning new things every day. It never stops. There is so much stuff that I need to learn, it never ends.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Georgi: Probably Romário and Ronaldo, they are professional soccer players. When I watched them play in the 1994 and 1998 World Cup, that's when I told myself that I wanted to be just like Ronaldo and become a professional soccer player.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Georgi: Definitely soccer. I love watching soccer games from Spain and my favorite team is FC Barcelona. Sometimes I'll play, I used to play a lot but I stopped because I don't want to get injured.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Georgi: It is probably from when I was around three years old. I was running around my house, pooped my pants, and I started crying! (Laughs)
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Georgi: I'm a vegetarian.
Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered?
Georgi: I would like people to remember me as a great fighter and a great person.
