Kevin,

What do you think about facing Roger Gracie?

8)

One of the most successful contemporary grapplers of Brazilian jiu-jitsu's first family expects to make his debut in U.S. mixed martial arts in two months.

Eight-time BJJ world champion Roger Gracie told Graciemag that he has a May 15 bout in Strikeforce scheduled with Kevin Randleman, a former titleholder in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and veteran of Pride Fighting Championships. It would be Gracie's first MMA bout in the United States, although he has a 2-0 record in the sport.

Gracie's last MMA appearance was May 2008 with a first-round submission of the much smaller Yuki Kondo on a Sengoku show in Tokyo. Gracie is based out of England, but also plans to spend a few weeks at the New York gym of his uncle, Renzo Gracie, before the Randleman bout.

Randleman (17-14) has lost two in a row, most recently dropping a split decision to Stanislav Nedkov in November at a Sengoku show.

Although he is a novice in mixed martial arts, Gracie has few peers in pure grappling. In addition to his unmatched record of eight championships at the Brazilian jiu-jitsu Mundials, he won the 88-98 kg (194 to 216 pounds) and open-weight tournaments at the 2005 Abu Dhabi Submission Combat Club championships.

The 28-year-old Roger Gracie has several ties to standout members of the famous clan. His maternal grandfather, Carlos Gracie, was the first of the clan to learn grappling. Roger Gracie's father, Mauricio Matta Gomes, was one of the only a handful of black belts under the late Rolls Gracie, a son of Carlos' legendary younger brother, Helio Gracie.

A light heavyweight bout between Kevin Randleman and Roger Gracie scheduled for Strikeforce “Heavy Artillery” on May 15 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., is in jeopardy, Sherdog.com has learned.

“I’m sick and I think I might have a little bit of a staph infection,” an aggravated Randleman told Sherdog.com on Tuesday. “They might have to replace me.”

Randleman said his physician would tell him on Wednesday if he is healthy enough to fight in 11 days. The former UFC champion, who was hospitalized for a lung infection in 2006 and a staph infection in 2007 that required surgery, said the illness has made it difficult for him to train and eat.

The 38-year-old Pride Fighting Championships veteran trains in four gyms in Las Vegas, he said, but doesn’t blame the facilities for his current state.

“I’ve trained for Gracie for 14 weeks, and I might get taken out by some nasty a-- people who can’t wash their butts, their feet,” said Randleman. “I’m livid. I take six showers every day. I’m Spam about cleanliness. I take a shower before I get into bed with my wife. If I wake up in the middle of the night and I’m sweaty, I take a shower.”

Randleman said that if he is forced to withdraw from the bout, he will also consider retirement. Still recognized as one of the most explosive athletes to ever enter the sport, the former Ohio State University wrestler has gone 1-2 since returning from his ailments to MMA in 2008.

Kevin Randleman and Roger Gracie will fight on May 15 in Strikeforce as the former UFC and Pride fighter has been medically cleared by doctors, after concern was raised about a possible staph infection.

"Randleman has been cleared to fight," said Strikeforce official Mike Afromowitz via text message. "The bout with Gracie is on."

Kevin also confirmed to PDG that he was indeed cleared for next weekends match-up! Kevin will be on here before the fight to answer any questions!
