10 Questions With Josh Pulsifer (by Darrick Patrick)

Josh "The Platypus" Pulsifer is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such Strikeforce, Extreme Fighting League, 5150 Combat League, Fight Party, High Roller Productions, Xtreme Fighting League, Cage Kings, and Freestyle Cage Fighting. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Nathan Murdock at Xtreme Fight Night on November 12th, 2010.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Josh: I wrestled at Missouri Valley College with guys like LC Davis and saw they were having success within MMA. I had been training lightly so I figured I would give it a try. I took my first fight on nine days notice and lost about twenty-eight pounds the same day as the weigh-in. It sucked, but I was hooked.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Josh: My mom and stepdad at home. My coaches at school, specifically Gary Dill in junior high and Steve Dunlap in high school. These people are the reason that I am successful in the areas of my life that matter most. I had an English teacher in high school who motivated me to be a teacher because I knew I could do better than her, but I won't name her specifically out of courtesy.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Josh: Train until your team says that you are ready. Also, don't take amateur fights that are just a promoter making money without paying you any.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Nathan Murdock on November 12th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Josh: He is a tall striker with decent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I plan on putting him to sleep.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Josh: Winning and eventually making it to the big show.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Josh: Gerald Harris, Daniel Roberts, Mike Budnik, Beau "OMA" Taylor, and Jake Shields. I have trained with all of them and they are the realest people I have met in the industry, plus they are all tough as hell.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Josh: My son, video games, and coaching wrestling.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Josh: Being an idiot with my brother when we lived with my mom and dad. He sliced his thumb making me a sandwich and we tried to hide it. He used his green Care Bear costume and the house looked like a crime scene when my mom got home. I think I was three or four years old.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Josh: I primarily grew up with my grandparents and was in and out of trouble as we moved a lot. I have lived in homeless shelters and in some pretty rough spots. I was the first in my family to graduate college though and made it out without becoming a punk.

Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered?

Josh: I want to be remembered as a good father and someone who made a difference to people. Whether that is through fighting or teaching, I do not care.
