UFC 123 Fight Card


Main Card:

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida via Decision - Split (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

RD. 1 - Rampage comes out pushing the action, stalking Machida as Machida is looking early for the leg kicks. More leg kicks by Machida, left-right combos by Rampage as he chases a back-peddling Machida. Rampage pushes Machida against the cage and lands an uppercut when they break. After a brief exchange in the center of the cage, Rampage pushes Machida against the cage again and again they break and move to the center. Not a whole lot of action round one.

RD. 2 - Machia more aggressive, throwing kicks and knees but Rampage charges him and holds him against the cage. Machida takes a nut shot from Rampage...fight resumes, Rampage ties Machida up again and he gets a takedown when he catches a knee from Machida. Machida gets back to his feet and they are back in the center, only briefly though as Machida pushes Rampage to the fence, again back in the center and Rampage lands a big uppercut after blocking a LHK from Machida. They clinch up again and the round ends with a slip by Rampage trying to unload.

RD. 3 - Rampage throws a leg kick, tries to follow with a combo but Machida backs away and again Rampage throws another leg kick. Machida rushes in and lands several strikes and knees that hurt Rampage, Rampage fires back with a combo of his own and Machida takes him down and works from half guard. Machida moves to side control, full mount now, short elbows from Machida and Machida tries for an armbar. Ramapge goes to pick him up and Machida lets go of the arm and they scramble back to their feet. From the clinch Machida drags Rampage to the ground and a reversal by Rampage and the fight ends with him in Machida's guard.



Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn via KO (Strikes) Round 1 (0:21)

RD. 1 - Hughes and Penn both come out throwing punches and a big right hook by Penn floors Hughes and then Penn jumps in and lands several more shots and the ref calls the fight...Hughes is out.



Gerald Harris vs. Maiquel Falcao via Decision - Unanimous (29-27, 29-28, 29-28)

RD. 1 - Falcao stalking Harris to start, Harris using his right jab to keep Falcao at bay, not much action so far...crowd booing...body kick by Falcao, Harris lunging in with the right jab, Falcao moves in and lands a big combo followed by a knee to the gut that drops Harris. Falcao moves in and is unleashing GNP from half guard. Falcao takes Harris's back and nearly chokes him out but the bell saves him.

RD. 2 - Falcao puts Harris down twice with rights and the second time he takes Harris's back, cranking on Harris's head, releases the hold and Falcao lands some GNP before Harris reverses, gets up and they are against the cage. They break to the center of the cage, Harris shoots, Falcao sprawls and Harris holds onto the single leg and pushes Falcao against the cage and eventually he gets Falcao down but Falcao is right back up. RHK by Falcao, Harris shoots again, sprawl and GNP from Falcao, stalemate now with Harris still holding the leg. They stand up as the round ends.

RD. 3 - Falcao is up 2 rounds to 0 to start the third frame, not much action to begin the round, maybe 3 punches thrown in the first 2 minutes...crowd booing, ref telling them to fight...leg kick by Falcao, Harris still trying to use his right jab and Harris finally shoots but Falcao defends it and that was the highlight of this round. Someone is going to be cut by Dana for sure.



Phil Davis vs. Tim Boetsch via Submission (Kimura) Round 2 (2:55)

RD. 1 - Both fighters looking for head kicks early, now they exchange leg kicks, Boetsch catches a kick from Davis but he can't sweep the leg and the are back to posturing and exchanging strikes. Boetsch is bleeding, Davis shoots and gets the takedown, Davis works from half guard and starts throwing big GNP into the body of Boetsch. More GNP from Davis, body shots and elbows to the head of Boetsch, after a scramble they are both standing and Davis lands several knees from the clinch.

RD. 2 - After a brief exchange Davis pushes Boetsch against the cage, double under-hooks for Davis, Davis drops down and gets the double leg and Boetsch barley misses a guillotine. Davis is in half guard, side control now and Davis grabs Boetsch's left arm, Boetsch is forced to tap from kimura.



George Sotiropolous vs. Joe Lauzon via Submission (Kimura) Round 2 (2:43)

RD. 1 - They touch gloves and come out swinging, good rights by Lauzon, Sotiropolous tries for the single leg but Lauzon defends it and he unloads combos. Sotiropolous shoots again and Lauzon hits him with several elbows to head and Sotiropolous moves to the clinch position and Lauzon breaks away. Sotiropolous pulls guard and Lauzon ends up in his half guard after a scramble, Lauzon back up briefly but Sotiropolous takes him down and works from north-south position. Sotiropolous gets full mount as the round ends and Lauzon reverses and lands some elbows.

RD. 2 - Sotiropolous misses a takedown attempt and pushes Lauzon against the cage still working for a takedown but they break and now it is Sotiropolous that is the aggressor in the striking battle. Takedown for Sotiropolous and he is in north-south position again, locks in the kimura and Lauzon taps.




Preliminary Card (Spike TV):

Matt Brown vs. Brian Foster via Submission (Guillotine Choke) Round 2 (2:11)

RD. 1 - Brown stalks Foster to start the fight, Foster gets a takedown during an exchange but lets Brown back up and Foster throws a flying knee that Brown catches and he takes Foster down. North-south position for Brown but Foster reverses and gets Brown's back. Brown escapes they are back standing exchanging knees, Foster uses counter striking and throws Brown onto his back. Foster loses ground control, Brown takes his back and locks in an armbar, Foster gets his arm free and ends up in Brown's guard.

RD. 2 - Brown starts off the second frame with kick to Foster's balls...fight resumes, both fighters exchange body kicks and Foster grabs Brown's leg and slams him to the ground. Foster moves in, GNP from Brown's guard and Brown is bleeding. Brown tries to escape and Foster catches him with a guillotine choke as Brown was trying get a hold of his leg.



Aaron Simpson vs. Mark Munoz via Decision - Unanimous (29-28 all judges)

RD. 1 - Both fighters come out looking to strike and Simpson shoots for the first takedown but Munoz stuffs it and they are back to exchanging strikes in the center of the cage. Munoz ties Simpson up against the cage but Simpson lands a nice knee as they break. Simpson gets two takedowns and brief back control twice but Munoz gets right back up and lands several punches, Simpson ties him up against the cage and the round ends with a good exchange.

RD. 2 - Simpson lands a body shot to start the second frame, catches Munoz's leg and Simpson gets a takedown but Munoz pops right back up and they exchanging punches again with Munoz getting the better of it. Munoz gets a takedown and when Simpson gets up he kicks Munoz in the junk...fight resumes, Munoz is bleeding from his forehead and he is now landing kicks including a RHK but Simpson comes back with a double-leg takedown and after less than a minute the ref stands them up. In the clinch Munoz lands a knee to Simpson's junk....fight resumes, Simpson catches Munoz's leg again and gets the the takedown but Munoz is right back up again.

RD. 3 - Simpson gets the takedown but Munoz reverses and takes his back and lands some big GNP shots but Simpson gets back to his feet and claims a finger to eye...fight resumes, more striking from Munoz and he pushes Simpson up against the cage. Munoz punishing Simpson against the cage, Simpson shoots but Munoz stuffs it and they break. After eating some punches, Simpson gets a single leg but Munoz pops back up again and both fighters are swinging for the fences and that is how it ends.

Yeah Superman isn't exactly known for his punching power............5 Ko's in 50 wins.
