The rash injuries plaguing big fight cards has struck again. Fightnews has learned that the October 6 WBC heavyweight championship clash between Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter at Madison Square Garden will be postponed due to injuries sustained by Maskaev to his back and ankle. According to Maskaev manager Fred Kesch, Oleg has been working very hard and "really wants this fight." Maskaev came back in pain and tilted over to one side after his roadwork yesterday. An MRI showed several herniated discs and a couple bulging discs in his back. In addition, Maskaev had a contusion on his ankle. "Oleg wanted to work through the pain but the doctor told him no," said Kesch, "he's never backed out of a fight." Kesch added that the bout would be postponed 90 to 100 days.
Meanwhile, the Peter Camp wants to keep the Madison Square Garden date and is lobbying for the WBC to strip Maskaev or approve an interim title fight against an opponent to be named.
