M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa - Card Updates

Postby keithlewis » Wed Mar 16, 2011 10:12 pm

M-1’s Lightweight Champion Artiom Damkovsky Prepares for Inaugural Title Defense

25 year old Belarusian mixed martial artist Artiom Damkovsky walked away from his last battle carrying M-1 Global’s first-ever lightweight championship belt and extended his current win streak to five, improving his record to a respectable 11-4. Capping off a seemingly ‘Cinderella story’ torrent through the 2010 Eastern Europe M-1 Selection tournament with back-to-back-to-back decisions, Damkovsky’s run was viewed as one of the toughest passes to championship status across the tournament brackets in any region and his quest culminated with gold.

The champion is now ready to cross the Atlantic ocean to make his first title defense against American Top Team protégé, Jose Figueroa in the headline bout at M-1 Challenge XXIV; the battle from the Constant Center in Norfolk, Virginia can be seen LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25th at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Since making his professional debut against Vladimir Ermolaev at Shooto Belarus – Bushido in July 2006, Damkovsky struggled through adversity as he developed his talents; his turn around came with a victory against Hiroyuki Abe and he hasn’t looked back since.

Inside the gruelling tournament structure, Damkovsky showcased an incredible combination of power, speed and skill that he uses effectively to wear out his opponents. He possesses a keen awareness for ring positioning which enables him to unleash stinging leg kicks and spinning back-fists and to engage in taunting cat-and-mouse counters; with an innate ability to take down his opponents with ease, it’s not uncommon for Damkovsky to put his opponents on the ground just to stand back up to his feet as if to say ‘I can take you down any time. Now get up and let’s go.’

Although only 5’8”, Damkovsky possesses a substantial reach and its clear this talented prospect understands how to effectively use this advantage. Being able to sit back and counter with explosive, powerful striking comparable to a welterweight, the Belarusian has shown to be extremely tactical in his game plan and apt in his defence; he’s also proven to critics that he has a durable chin capable of taking the heaviest of shots and then continue on relentlessly.

His impressive tournament performances were followed up with victory in his title shot against Mairbek Taisumov, one of M-1 Challenge XXI’s most exciting battles; Damkovsky weathered a first-round storm to comeback and punish Taisumov in the third with jumping knees and outside leg-kicks. While trying to fend off the relentless attack, Taisumov took an unintentional finger to the eye which the ringside physician deemed enough to warrant a stoppage and declaring Damkovsky the victor.

As Europe’s leading mixed martial arts promotion’s first-ever M-1 Challenge lightweight champion, Damkovsky represents a formidable roadblock for Americas Selections tournament winner Jose Figueroa who has anxiously been awaiting his shot to dethrone his foe on US soil.

M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa airs LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Jose “The People’s Champ” Figueroa – Ready to Dethrone

Waiting patiently since his last trip inside the ring when he won the 2010 M-1 Selection Americas lightweight tournament, Jose Figueroa is ready to seize an unprecedented victory in his title shot at the headline bout of M-1 Challenge XXIV; the events airs LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from the Constant Center in Norfolk, Virginia.

Hailing from Orlando, Florida and the highly touted American Top Team camp, ‘The People’s Champ’ is a role model to the sport and to his son. As a professional fighter, he fuels the growth of mixed martial arts to the younger generation of students and prospects though instruction to groups and individuals seeking to develop their own skill set.

“Mixed martial arts is my college, my job and my profession,” says a modest Figueroa. “I teach and train everyday to further the sport and to take care of my family. I’m a father and having my little boy look up to me and want to do all the things I do is awesome.”

Standing at 6’3”, Figueroa is a monstrous lightweight who made his professional debut in 2006 with a decisive TKO Victory over Chandler Belaston. From here, he went on to win another three consecutive bouts before tasting his first defeat by way of submission thanks to a suffocating guillotine choke sunk in by notable Jonathan Brookins. The loss was shaken off and Figueroa went on a three-fight tear before falling off the horse and losing three straight. Some may see the string of losses as a fighter losing his game and ability – until you look deeper into the story. These three losses came against top-tier competition: Eric Reynolds, Edson Barboza and Luis Palomino, who have a combined record of 35-11. Figueroa has been fighting high level competition from day one and is one tough competitor himself holding a respectable 9-4 record as a professional fighter.

In his performances throughout the 2010 M-1 Selection tournament, Figueroa effectively utilized his reach advantage and showed overwhelming control on the ground; fighting from guard, the imposing fighter is capable of posting up and dropping down heavy strikes at will and has solid conditioning that go the distance should the judges need to decide the outcome.

Coming out of his tournament bouts against Josh Thorpe and George ‘Light’s Out’ Sheppard relatively unscathed, “The People’s Champ” has been focused on his training and eagerly waiting for his opportunity to seize the championship spotlight. In a mere 16 days, the gritty American fighter will look to make Damkovsky’s first title defense a miserable experience on route to becoming the next M-1 Challenge lightweight

Team Quest’s Tyson Jeffries Eyes M-1 Global’s Middleweight Strap

Oregon native and Team Quest fighter Tyson ‘The Anti Hero’ Jeffries is aiming to take out Magomed Sultanakhmedov at M-1 Challenge XXIV: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa and rightfully take hold of the vacant M-1 middleweight championship belt. With the battle airing LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast), Jeffries has been awarded a golden opportunity to solidify himself as a hot-topic in North American mixed martial arts forums.

Coming from a team known for producing impeccable fighters with sound wrestling foundations, Coach Matt Lindland has placed high expectations on his protégé to execute hard-fought, exciting tilts. As a Sport Fight veteran, Jeffries has built a 7-4 record and possesses the qualities and skills necessary to be a successful professional fighter; being exposed to the Team Quest mentality is certainly aiding his development, “I train with the some of the best fighters in the world ... I owe lots of appreciation to my coaches and friends,” says Jeffries.

On route to winning the 2010 M-1 Selections Americas tournament middleweight brackets, Jeffries utilized his submission skills and striking abilities to subdue opponents. Facing Mike Johnson in his opening round bout, Jeffries systematically dismantled Johnson’s striking with a steadfast defence and effective counter-punching.

Facing the wild striking of Plinio Cruz in his semi-finals bout, Jeffries maintained an impenetrable defence as he stalked and cut off Cruz’s position inside the ring. Although standing within Cruz’s striking range on occasion which allowed Cruz to score much needed points, Jeffries was able to withstand the barrages and go on to win a razor-thin split decision and berth in the Finals.

Watching Jeffries from the beginning of the tournament, it is easy to conclude that his Finals bout was where he matured as a fighter. The middleweight finals battle with Team Bombsquad’s Mike Geurin took the night’s ‘fight of the night’ honours, is regarded as the highlight bout of the tournament and is also cemented as M-1 Global’s #3 fight of 2010. When Jeffries’ miraculous triangle is tied into the equation, it’s no wonder why this fight also captured the night’s ‘submission of the night’ award as well. Jeffries vs. Geurin exemplified the exciting MMA action that the M-1 Selection tournament was designed to produce.

Jeffries is a patient fighter capable of sitting back and effectively countering while always maintaining an offensive ring position to compliment his takedown threat; he also exhibits a veteran’s composure when timing his opponent’s offensives which allows his to set up a magnificent overhand right. Adding to his versatility, Jeffries is comfortable fighting off his back and has a repertoire of submissions as evident by the elbow-snapping armbar which he transitioned into the bout-ending triangle, a truly miraculous, 11th hour, highlight reel finish.

Jeffries and his camp watched M-1 Challenge XXIII this past weekend taking extremely close notes on Sultanakhmedov as he put away Plinio Cruz and are now finalizing their game plan to put a choke-hold on the middleweight belt. The ‘Anti Hero’ will have 25 minutes to breakdown Sultanakhmedov’s vast vault of experience as he aims to become Europe’s leading mixed martial arts promotion’s 185-pound champion.

M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa airs LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Magomed Sultanakhmedov’s Second Shot at the M-1 Middleweight Strap

Magomed ‘the White Wolf’ Sultanakhmedov overcame a haunting defeat and returned to grace in front his home country crowd with a commanding performance over Plino Cruz at M-1 Challenge XXIII. Walking away with the card’s Fight of the Night top honour, Sultanakhmedov proved he’s still one the promotion’s most-feared warriors and has been awarded with his second opportunity to seize the middleweight championship belt; Sultanakhmedov next faces Tyson ‘The Anti-Hero’ Jeffries inside the Constant Center in Norfolk, Virginia at M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Touching gloves to open his bout with Cruz, the pair commenced to trade standing up until Sultanakhmedov executed a text-book hip throw that took Cruz to the mat where he was forced to defend from his back. Working through side control, half guard and full guard, Sultanakhmedov postured up to rain shots through Cruz’s defense all the while with Cruz working furiously to lock in submissions including a nearly secured triangle and kimura. After being stood up by the referee, the decorated strikers opted to close out the round standing up.

To start the second frame, the fighters once again touched gloves as a sign of mutual respect and sportsmanship and quickly engaged in trading stinging leg kicks. Setting up Cruz with perfect head movement, Sultanakhmedov nailed a same-hand jab-left-hook combination that stunned and hurt Cruz who backed off immediately to create space. Stuffing Cruz’s subsequent takedown attempt easily and smelling blood, Sultanakhmedov pounced on Cruz while he was still on the canvass and fired a barrage of unanswered, rapid fire rights until the referee stepped in to halt the bout.

With the much needed victory, Sultanakhmedov shook off the dastardly loss to Rafal Moks and is ready for what the 2010 M-1 Selection – Americas tournament winner, Tyson Jeffries holds in store as he aims to lay grips to the middleweight strap for the second time. His wealth of experience and refined technique may have him marked as the favourite to win the bout against Jeffries but it’s imperative that Sultanakhmedov doesn’t overlook this as a free pass inside the ropes; he’s entering the ring on short notice and must take Jeffries’ relentless fighting style seriously if he intends to make this championship outing a success.

Since making his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2003, Magomed “The White Wolf” Sultanakhmedov has quietly amassed a respectable 15-5 record battling in the European circuit; it won’t be long before the North American mixed martial arts fan base witnesses his stealth submission skills and laser-guided precision striking.

Hailing from Tula, Russia, this 26 year old middleweight possesses vast experience and refined technique, making him the primary favourite to win his weight class in the 2010 M-1 Selections Eastern European tournament. He delivered on these expectations and won the M-1 Selection brackets in July with a devastating TKO victory over Alexei Belyaev.

Sultanakhmedov is a world champion in karate and kick-boxing, as well as a veteran tournament participant for M-1, Dream and K-1 Hero ’s. Many have compared his style to the great Mirko Cro Cop of the past; a great left-handed fighter with a sound defense and able to deliver deadly kicks at will.

To culminate a successful 2009, ‘The White Wolf’ won the M-1 Challenge international tournament with a text-book demolishing of Dmitry Samoilov, leading his team to the Champions of Russia title.

With his consistent success in the ring and displays of athletic supremacy, Magomed Sultanakhmedov has also cemented himself as one of the stars in M-1 Global’s and Russia’s inaugural venture into mixed martial arts reality television’s M-1 Fighter. His knockout victory over the talented Pavel Kusch early in the third round has fans speaking highly of this warrior who is clearly looking to continue his winning ways.

Knowing Jeffries and his camp have been studying tape and taking extremely close notes, Sultanakhmedov will be devising a game plan to combat the Team Quest protégé’s exceptional wrestling, boxing and defensive skills. The feared Russian striker will have 25 minutes to tactically tear apart his opponent in front of a capacity crowd and to those tuning in from across North America.

Fans can catch the rising phenom make his North American debut LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

At only 22 years old, Sarnavskiy brings a veteran’s experience to his game with thanks coming from his team, RusFighters Sports Club in St. Petersburg, and his mentorship from middleweight ace Alexander Shlemenko. The ‘Tiger’ knows how to finish his fights with precision striking which has earned him five victories by TKO/KO, making this element of his game to be considered his most dangerous attribute. On the flip side of the coin, he’s also demonstrated a strong submission game, favouring the triangle and rear naked chokes, which have also earned him another five “W’s”. Having only required the judges to decide the outcome twice in his career, he holds wins over European notables Maratbek Kalabekov, Karen Grigorian and Maxim Kuptsov; Sarnavskiy is clearly establishing himself as one of the world’s great fighters in the 155lb division.

Walking away victorious in his first two bouts in the 2010 M-1 Selection - Eastern European tournament, Sarnavskiy was set to advance to the Finals but was forced to withdraw just days before the clash with current promotion champion Artiom Damkovsky due to an illness; but his potential certainly didn’t go unnoticed. ‘The Tiger’ was given an opportunity to climb the lightweight contention ladder with a bout against Victor Kuku on the larger M-1 Challenge stage.

In his bout against Kuku, the talented rising star showed why he’s considered one of Europe’s most dangerous lightweight fighters by unleashing a devastating spinning back-fist that knocked out Kuku in epic fashion, ending the anticipated bout in only 14 seconds and marking it as one of 2010’s greatest MMA knock-outs. With the victory, Sarnavskiy maintained perfection as a professional fighter and drew light to his position as one of RusFighters Sports Club’s marquee fighters alongside teammate Alexander Schlemenko.

Coming away unscathed, Sarnavskiy was quickly added to M-1’s sophomore Challenge event of 2010 and faced Arsen Ubaidulaev. Viewed as heavy favourite coming into the fight, Sarnavskiy again delivered with a glorious standing guillotine choke inside the opening minute.

Seeming to be handle the pressure of being undefeated, Sarnavskiy will be aiming to make the most of his trip across the Atlantic and deliver a jaw-dropping impression on the North American fan base that is quickly paying attention to the ‘Tiger’s’ antics and athleticism.

Bacallao Returns Intent to De-Claw ‘The Tiger’

Josh ‘Iron Heart’ Bacallao steps up at M-1’s big stage for his bout against undefeated European lightweight prospect, Alexander ‘The Tiger’ Sarnavskiy at M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa. Fans can capture the 155-pound title contention bout LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Lakeland, Florida native Josh “Iron Heart” Bacallao is ok with being considered the quiet and often over-looked opponent. Sporting a tight 6-2 record decorated with submission, TKO and decision victories, his strategy of canning the trash talk and simply putting up technically sound performances certainly speaks volumes for this young fighter when he prefers to keep to his silent side.

At 23 years of age, manger Ross Kellin of Champions MMA sings praise about Bacallao’s tenacity in the gym and his dedication to evolving his skills. “Josh puts everything on the table when it comes to the sport and becoming a holistic, well-rounded athlete. His core foundation comes from his high school wrestling background; his stand up is great; he has good jiu-jitsu. Josh is an exciting and humble fighter.”

Inside the ring Bacallao’s proven to be a strong, explosive fighter with dangerous hands, which is why he’s been invited back to fight with Europe’s leading mixed martial arts promotion, M-1 Global, after a difficult run through the 2010 M-1 Selection Americas tournament; a controversial fight with Josh Key ended in a no-contest, which advanced him in to the semi-finals where he next lost a tough spilt-decision to George Sheppard.

Speaking with Bacallao, a confidence voice boomed through the phone; “My opportunity with M-1 is all I’m focussed on right now. I’m doing everything I can within my power to ensure I deliver a flawless performance – the outcome will take care of itself.”

Intent on making the most of his opportunity against Sarnavskiy, Bacallao wants to make his true impression felt and silence critics who have already counted him out.

M-1 Global’s BJJ Ace Hits SHOWTIME: Magalhaes Eager to Deepen his Impact

Decorated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, Vinny ‘Pezao’ Magalhaes (6-5) faces stiff competition at M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa where he’ll aim to hand undefeated Jake Doerr (6-0) his first loss and move one step closer to earning a shot at the M-1 Global light heavyweight championship belt. Fans can capture the submission specialist in action LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Riding solid momentum from back-to-back wins and victorious in four of his last five outings it seems that the three time BJJ world champion has a re-focussed mindset.

In his first outing with M-1 Global this past December, Magalhaes executed an impressive inverted triangle submission for the victory over Alihan Magomedov, an excellent performance to mark his return to the ring after being sidelined for the better portion of 2010 while rehabbing from knee surgery. The win caught the attention of the M-1 Global executive team who offered up a six-fight contract with Europe’s leading mixed martial arts promotion; the battle with Doerr marks the slick submission specialist’s first trip into the ring under the new 2-year deal.

As a world-class BJJ expert, Magalhaes currently trains and teaches at the TapouT Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he’s dedicated to evolving his skills in Wrestling, Muay Thai and Boxing; with a versatile arsenal, Magalhaes has every opportunity to become one of the world’s best light heavyweight fighters and a marquee name for the M-1 Global promotion.

A Black Belt under instructors Vinicius Aieta and Royler Gracie, Magalhaes won thirteen matches - ten by submission - and took home two Gold Medals in the 2005 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship while still a Brown Belt. In 2007, Magalhaes would become the first Jiu-Jitsu No Gi World Champion in the Super Heavy Weight Division as a Black Belt.

2009 marked an impressive year for Magalhaes at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, where he took home a pair of bronze medals in the Under 99 kg and Absolute Divisions. On his way to win the bronze in his weight Division, Magalhaes defeated BJJ World Champion Rodrigo Cavaca, the 2003 ADCC World Champion and two-time BJJ Absolute World Champion, Marcio Cruz, ADCC Brazil Trial Winner Glover Teixeira; the quest for gold ended with a loss by points to the eventual Champion Xande Ribeiro.

On his run for his second bronze, Magalhaes beat the 2005 ADCC Absolute World Champion Dean Lister by Judges Decision, moving on to the Quarter-Finals against the two-time NCAA Wrestler and MMA Prospect Chris Weidman, who he beat with his patented ‘Flying Armbar’; the semi-final match against Braulio Estima ended with Magalhaes losing by points. In the 3rd Place match, Vinny scored a late takedown against Gunnar Nelson which guaranteed the win.

Magalhaes has also been instrumental in educating some of Europe’s top prospects and M-1Global’s upcoming stable of young fighters by leading a training seminar in Saint Petersburg, Russia late last year. Talking about his experience, ‘Pezao’ was quick to point out the determination his pupils possessed. “I’ve trained in Japan, Brazil, the United States and now Russia, one thing that I can say is that the Russian fighters were some of the most intense guys that I have ever been around. It’s clear they don’t have the same resources we have in the U.S.A. but that doesn’t change how tough they can be.”

A recognizable figure to the North American fan base, Magalhaes was part of the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter where he went on to defeat Lance Evans, Jules Bruchez and Krzysztof Soszynski, advancing to the TUF finals against Ryan Bader where he lost by TKO.

Ready to continue making his impact felt within the 205-pound division, Magalhaes is primed to make the most of his opportunity against Doerr on one of the United States’ most prestigious, premium television networks; a win places him atop the LHW food chain and directly into title contention.

MMA Prospect Jake Doerr Seizes Opportunity: Faces Vinny Magalhaes at M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa

Undefeated MMA prospect Jake Doerr (6-0) has his perfect record awarded with the toughest test in his career; the La Crosse, Wisconsin native will face BJJ ace, Vinny Magalhaes (6-5) on the televised main card of M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa; fans can capture the light heavyweight bout’s action LIVE from the Constant Center in Norfolk, Virginia, on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

A fan-favourite and veteran of the Ultimate Combat Sports promotion, Doerr has maintained perfection as a professional fighter and has yet to require the judges’ services to decide an outcome, in fact, Doerr has finished every one of his opponents inside the first round. His well-rounded and aggressive fighting style made him an easy choice as an addition to M-1 Global’s March 25th card in Norfolk, Virginia.

At 30 years of age, Doerr has been fighting professionally since 2004, although be it sporadically; Doerr took a hiatus in 2008, made one appearance on the canvass in 2009 and was again inactive though 2010. Nevertheless, the Team Howell fighter and training partner to Nick ‘The Goat’ Thompson remains undefeated.

Doerr’s last outing 13 months ago was against Rico Washington Sr. where he utilized his powerful upper body and balance to sweep his opponent to the mat; from there out, Doerr worked diligently to secure full mount, posture up and drop heavy bombs through Washington’s defense. With Washington looking to escape and making the fatal error of giving his up his back, Doerr seized the opportunity to flatten out his foe and lock-in the rear naked choke for the first-round submission victory.

In facing the highly decorated submission specialist Vinny Magalhaes, it’s unlikely Doerr will have any advantage should the bout hit the canvass; this prospect’s best chances for victory come standing up. With the edge in striking abilities, Doerr possess one-punch knock-out power and is effective working in his opponent’s guard where he can throw down a relentless ground and pound. If he can stun Magalhaes from his feet and engage a lightning quick barrage, Doerr could shock the critics who have classed him as the significant underdog and walk away with his undefeated record intact.
