Hi Shayna, do you have any updates on your training for Invicta FC 3? Maybe some cool training videos!

Thanks, can't wait for your redemption!

Shayna sent this along.................

My Voice: Mixed martial arts is a sport, job - Don't confuse wannabes who commit violent acts with dedicated athletes

http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs.dl ... ck_check=1

I have never been in a street fight. I have never come close, nor have I tried, to kill anyone. I train six days a week, two times a day. I participate in mixed martial arts for a living. As in, it’s my job. My actual job.

I say “mixed martial arts” and not “cage fighting,” because the sport of MMA does not exclusively take place in a cage. It’s just that the cage has been found to be safer for wrestling than a boxing ring, where participants can fall or be pushed out. But I’m not writing to argue the proven safety of MMA for its participants or compared to other sports. You can Google that yourself.

I am writing because in the debate going on about MMA being too violent, there is a very crucial mistake being made. No one arguing against MMA is placing a separation between sport and fighting.

I am a professional. And frankly, I’m tired of being defined by someone getting in trouble in a bar because he throws out the term “MMA style” or “trainer.” Because the truth is, my gym (Next Edge Academy) is the only gym on this side of the state that is certified and accredited in each of the arts that it teaches. Our trainers did not “win every bar fight they were in,” or claim to be “real tough guys” back in the day before fighting was a sport. And there is a huge difference. Imagine if a “tough guy” walked into the Augustana College wrestling room and claimed to be a coach because he had won every wrestling match he had when they moved the coffee table out of the way in the living room. Or, if this same tough guy rainbow double-legged someone into the pavement and killed them, claiming he learned it from watching a meet at Augie. He would get laughed all the way to jail. But for some reason, add a few techniques to that same wrestling, and everyone can claim to be a trainer or legitimate practitioner without anyone questioning it.

And the media using terms such as “MMA-style” isn’t helping our cause either. MMA is not a style. It is a sport. Every fighter trains in different arts and comes up with a style. To say that George Zimmerman was being hit with “MMA-style striking” when Trayvon Martin was on top of him is propaganda and sensationalist terminology fueling fear. The schoolyard mount and punch has been used in street fights for centuries.

Kids have been known to race their Hondas down 41st Street in what is a very dangerous act that potentially could kill many people. And perhaps if Formula Drift or NASCAR didn’t exist, there would be fewer incidents of that. Except people know to separate the sport of racing cars from the dangerous act of street racing. So, when someone who claims to watch MMA puts a garage together and pretends to “train” fighters, with no one asking for certifications or documentation of accolades, all I ask is the same respect as any other similar incident outside of sport. Realize those people are not professionals and are not actually practicing anything within the realm of MMA.

The incident in Watertown was committed by someone who is not an accredited MMA practitioner or trainer. The crime was committed in a bar, not at an MMA event. It wasn’t even on a night that an event was scheduled. And the gentleman who died in Rapid City might have been saved had a commission been in place to ensure proper medical screening before the fight.

I’m not asking anyone to like MMA, or even support it. All I’m asking is to treat me like a professional athlete. And when there are those who want to be, and pretend and claim to be, at least give me the respect to not have them be the example of me. Don’t punish me and my very professional lifestyle because some “fans” can’t control themselves.
What do you expect? The comedian is dead.

Hey Shayna,

So when your ankle injury is healed are you going to be fighting in the UFC or Invicta FC?
