SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix – Final in Galati - Results
UPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix – Final, held in Galati, Romania, was a huge success. In front of 5.000 fans and millions of people watching on tv, SUPERKOMBAT stars offered an epic event mixed with show elements. Benjamin Adegbuyi shocked the audience and won the rematch over Pavel Zhuravlev, Andrei Stoica and Igor Bugaenko captured the SUPERKOMBAT titles.
Live in almost 100 countries, the heavyweight tournament was won by Frank Munoz, who defeated D’Angelo Marshall in the semifinals and Redouan Cairo in the final. Due the humanitarian campaign initiated by SUPERKOMBAT, all the incomes from the tickets sales were donated to the flood victims of Galati.
In one of the most exciting fights of the year, Benjamin Adegbuyi won the rematch with Pavel Zhuravlev, SUPERKOMBAT champion of 2012 tournament and Legend champion. Benjamin Adegbuyi landed powerfull left hooks, Zhuravlev being counted twice in the end of the first two rounds. A KO artist, Benjamin Adegbuyi managed his 15th win of his career with a perfect right hook after 0:35 of third round. “Outside the ring we are friends, Pavel Zhuravlev is one of the best fighters in the world, but I was better this night. I was preparing this rematch since last year so I’m happy because I ended an amazing season with another big success. Next year I want to win the final tournament of SUPERKOMBAT”, said Benjamin Adegbuyi, who won this year also against the K-1® World Grand Prix – Final runner-up Ismael Londt.
Back in the ring at SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix – Final Elimination, Raul “Iron” Catinas impressed again with another brutal KO this time against one of the greatest brawlers in the world, Paul “The Sting” Slowinski. With a sustained offensive and aggressive style, Raul Catinas mixed his uppercut shots with left hook and in at the end of the third round he knocked-out Paul Slowinski, after he was counted two times before. “I’m not 100% myself in this moment, but I promise you that in 2014 will be my year”, declared Raul Catinas in an interview for Samuel Pagal of Eurosport.
For 15 minutes, Stoica brothers entered the history of the professional kickboxing as the first brothers with world titles belts. Challenger no. 1 and underdog in the battle for SUPERKOMBAT super cruiserweight title, Andrei Stoica had a great start and after he won 10-9 first round he landed a perfect right hook, Ondrej Hutnik being counted. Former world-muay thai champion risked everything in the last round, but Stoica blocked the shots and was declared the winner by unanimous decision. This was the first defeat of Hutnik since march 2008 after serie of 29 wins in a row.
The official challenger for the cruiserweight title of Bogdan Stoica, Igor Bugaenko dominate the fight and he became the new SUPERKOMBAT cruiserweight champion after all three judges took a unanimous decision for him: 30-28, 30-29 and 30-28. Shortly after the fight, Stoica announced he wants the rematch. “It’s the most beautiful day in my career, Bogdan Stoica wasn’t expecting of me to block his flying knees. I’m ready for any fight now, including a rematch with him”, said Igor Bugaenko who scored his 51 succes of his career.
In the entertainment fight of the night, Alexandru Lungu (165 kg) knocked-out Mike Bourke in the first round after a vicious right hook and the local star of Galati, Alexandru Nedelcu, won by KO in the second round with a spectacular high-kick over Mohammed El Boulahiati.
Frank Munoz became the third SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix champion, after Sergey Laschenko and Pavel Zhuravlev, winning the final tournament of 2013. “I can’t believe, I’m extremely happy, I can’t describe with words what I feel now. I had a great day. Two powerfull opponents. Even if Redouan Cairo is my gym colleague, both of us tried to win this final, but I was better”, declared Frank Munoz, which who was greeted by dozens of fans at on his comeback in Spain.
