UFC Fight Night Stockholm - Fight Card Updates

Postby keithlewis » Thu Jul 24, 2014 2:49 pm

With just one month until tickets go on sale for the highly anticipated UFC Fight Night Stockholm on 4th October at the Globe Arena, UFC today announced the first confirmed bout which sees Nico Musoke take on Amir Sadollah. The welterweight bout is an exciting first announcement to the fifth live event for UFC EMEA and will be greatly received by UFC fans all over the world with Swede Musoke taking on The Ultimate Fighter Series 7 champion Sadollah in his hometown.

Musoke, from Botkyrka in the capital city of Stockholm, lost his last fight to Kelvin Gastelum in June but recorded two straight wins previous to that against Viscardi Andrade and Alessio Sakara, leaving him with a 12-3-0 record and seven first round finishes. Amir Sadollah (7-4-0) returns to the Octagon after a two year absence with his last outing being a loss against Dan Hardy back in 2012. One of very few fighters to have exclusively fought inside the UFC, October 4th will be the third time Sadollah has represented the organisation in Europe.

Undefeated Swede Niklas Backstrom (8-0, 1NC) will meet Brit Mike Wilkinson (8-1) at UFC Fight Night Stockholm on October 4th. Backstrom will be looking to build on his impressive debut at UFC Fight Night Berlin where despite being a late replacement for Thiago Tavares he earned a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for his submission win over Tom Niinimaki.

“I feel great about fighting at home in Sweden! The Swedish crowd is always amazing so it's always something special fighting here.” said Backstrom.

Featherweight Wilkinson will make his return to the Octagon after over a year on the sidelines and will no doubt be eager to put the disappointing defeat in his last outing against Rony Jason behind him.

Backstrom, however will enjoy the home support come October 4th: “I know the Dublin event had a loud crowd but damn right the Swedish crowd will out do them!"

UFC Fight Night Stockholm will take place at the Globe Arena on October 4th, with tickets on sale in August. The whole event will be available to watch live on UFC FIGHT PASS.

Fresh from his victory in Dublin earlier this month, Ilir "The Sledgehammer" Latifi will step into the Octagon in front of his home fans to meet Jan Blachowicz at UFC Fight Night Stockholm. Blachowicz will be making his UFC debut having been a former light heavyweight champion in his native Poland. Latifi has finished his last two opponents inside the first round but Blachowicz will be eager to make his mark inside the UFC and silence the Swedish fans.

"Last time I fought in Stockholm my preparations were minimal, but the audience was amazing. This time will be even better, and after having heard the intense crowd in Dublin breaking the noise record I’m determined to make the Swedish crowd beat that," said The Sledgehammer.

"I’m especially relying on my fans from Malmo in Sweden. Half the Globe will be filled by the fans from Malmo and my fight will be the loudest."

Top middleweight prospect Scott Askham will get a tough assignment in his UFC debut on October 4, as he faces off with surging veteran Magnus Cedenblad in the Swede's hometown of Stockholm in UFC Fight Night action. But the Doncaster native is ready for his first bout under the bright lights.

"Ever since I started fighting it's been a dream of mine to fight in the UFC," said Askham. "I have already said I am not here to make up the numbers; Magnus is getting put away. I am not expecting a good reception in Magnus's home town, but I am still going to put on a show for the Swedish fans.”

12-0 as a pro, Askham's record includes seven knockout victories. This finishing mentality sits well with Cedenblad, who has only gone the distance once, with recent UFC wins over Jared Hamman and Krzysztof Jotko adding to his reputation as a premier finisher in the Octagon.

“Scott is obviously a tough opponent with a perfect 12-0 record, very much like my last opponent whom I beat, so I look forward to giving him his first loss too," said Cedenblad. "It’s always special to be someone’s first and he will always remember me and Stockholm. It will be a good welcome to the UFC and to my hometown.

“(UFC President) Dana White is probably tired of my guillotine finishes by now so I’m aiming for a head kick KO this time to get the bonus again,” added "Jycken."

Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick "The Horror" Story

Fresh off his big win over Zak Cummings at UFC Fight Night in Dublin on July 19, unbeaten welterweight phenom Gunnar Nelson will make his first headlining performance as a UFC fighter on Saturday, October 4, when he takes on American veteran Rick "The Horror" Story at the Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

“I am honored to fight in Sweden and to headline this card," Iceland's Nelson said. "I expect the Swedish crowd to be pretty loud. I believe I have a big fan base in Sweden. They love my kind of style of fighting and I am of course Scandinavian so we have a good connection. So overall I think it’s going to be a great night – I am really excited about this opportunity."

“I have fought in Germany before but it will be my first time in Stockholm, so I am looking forward to seeing the city," Story said. "My schedule now will be to pack up and head down to Arizona to the MMA Lab to start training. I’m really excited for this fight."

Undefeated in 14 professional fights, the 26-year-old Nelson is already 4-0 in his UFC campaign with three wins coming by way of submission. On October 4, "Gunni" will face the toughest test of his career in Story, a Washington state native who has fought and beaten the best over the course of his career.

“Rick Story has fought many of the best fighters," Nelson said. "He beat the current champion and he is very experienced and is a very good wrestler. He is a tough opponent and I am happy to be fighting him."

Owner of wins over Johny Hendricks, Thiago Alves, and Jake Ellenberger, the 29-year-old Story had his first fight with the renowned MMA Lab in his corner on July 16, and he delivered on of his best performances to date as he submitted Leonardo Mafra in the second round.

“Oh man, this is a really exciting matchup," Story said. "Stylistically it’s going to be great because Gunnar is a grappler and an attacker, and when it comes to fighting you can’t ask for more than that - someone who attacks and comes at you."

Tor "The Hammer" Troeng vs. Krzysztof Jotko

European middleweights looking to get back in the win column will meet up in Stockholm on October 4, as Sweden's own Tor "The Hammer" Troeng faces Poland's Krzysztof Jotko in UFC Fight Night action.

”This is a fantastic opportunity to redeem myself and show my true capacity at home in The Globe," Troeng said. "I’m extremely anxious to get this shot and I will really bring it.”

"I could not wait for this next fight," Jotko said. "I have a great hunger after my last one."

A member of the Ultimate Fighter season 17 cast, Umea's Troeng has been an exciting addition to the roster, submitting Adam Cella and engaging in a Fight of the Night against Rafael Natal before a hard-fought decision loss to Trevor Smith in July.

“Krzysztof will of course be a very tough test and I’m going to make sure that I learn as much as I can from my teammate Magnus Cedenblad, who is the only one who has defeated him,” Troeng said.

The 24-year-old Jotko currently stands at 1-1 in the UFC, with a win over Bruno Santos and a submission loss to Magnus Cedenblad. On October 4, he gets the chance to go over the .500 mark.

"This fight is very important to me because I desire a rematch with Magnus Cedenblad, so I'll be prepared for him 1000 percent," Jotko said.

Nico Musoke vs. Alexander Yakovlev

With former Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadollah removed from his October 4 bout with Nico Musoke to be placed on another upcoming card, Stockholm's Musoke has a new foe to tangle with in his hometown, as Russia's Alexander Yakovlev will step in for the UFC Fight Night bout.

Unbeaten in eight of his last nine, Musoke has won two of his three UFC bouts, submitting Alessio Sakara and decisioning Viscardi Andrade. Looking to bounce back from a decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in June, the welterweight prospect will now meet up with Yakovlev, a 10-year veteran with a win over Paul Daley who will be seeking his first UFC win this October.

Cathal Pendred vs. Gasan Umalatov

Dublin's Cathal Pendred ignited the crowd in his home country on July 19 with a come from behind win over Mike King, and on Saturday, October 4, the Ultimate Fighter 19 alumnus will be back in action as he makes his UFC welterweight debut against Gasan Umalatov.

"Straight after the last fight I was thinking about what's next for me," Pendred said. "I knew that Stockholm was next in Europe and I've always wanted to go there and it's perfect timing for my next fight. I made it known that I was interested and I'm really pleased I got it."

In the UFC Fight Night main event, Pendred's teammate Gunnar Nelson faces Rick Story.

Winner of 14 of his 18 pro bouts, the 26-year-old Pendred gave up size and weight on The Ultimate Fighter 19 and in his first UFC fight against King when competing at middleweight, but now at 170 pounds he will be at his best when he tackles the Octagon elite.

"It's a good matchup," Pendred said of the bout with Umalatov. "He has a good record and he is an exciting fighter. But I never overanalyze the opposition; I prefer to focus on myself."

Holding a 1-1 record in the UFC, Russia's Umalatov is coming off a decision win over hometown favorite Paulo Thiago in May, and on October 4, "The Cobra" aims to strike again when he faces Pendred.

On October 4, one of the most popular featherweights in the UFC, "The Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung, will be back in the Octagon to start his road back to a 145-pound title shot when he faces Akira Corassani in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Stockholm at the Globe Arena.

Out of action since a courageous effort against UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in August of 2013, one that saw him dislocate his shoulder, Jung has rehabbed the injury and he's ready for battle against Lund, Sweden's Corassani, winner of three of his four UFC bouts, including a victory over Robbie Peralta in his home country in 2013.
