Going Mainstream In WrestleMania XXIV

The spectacle that is WrestleMania – professional wrestling’s annual showcase event – rolled through Orlando’s Citrus Bowl last night, with more than 70,000 fans witnessing complete, scripted mayhem. At the center of the show was the public face of boxing, none other than Floyd Mayweather Jr., who took on and knocked out a seven foot tall, four hundred plus pound behemoth called “The Big Show”. The fight featured all that is professional wrestling – a great story line, flying chairs, brass knuckles, pretty girls, a screwball referee and an incredible high energy atmosphere.

Leading up to the event, Floyd Mayweather endured a great deal of criticism from some who claim his participation in WrestleMania somehow diminishes the sport of boxing. Are you kidding me? I think it is safe to say many of the powers that be who pull the strings in the sport of boxing have already done a good job of achieving that. Nothing has done more to hurt the sport than the sanctioning of multiple champions in each division and the proliferation of pay-per-view shows.

If anything, Floyd’s participation in such popular events as WrestleMania and Dancing With The Stars has done nothing but help the sport of boxing. At a minimum, his involvement in each puts boxing on the radar screen among audiences that have long forgotten about the sport. At best, he has crossed over into the mainstream and will attract some new fans to take an interest in his particular fights or boxing as a whole.

Let’s face it. Oscar De La Hoya’s career has been winding down for the past five years, and he has promised 2008 will be his last in boxing. Fans and media have worried about how the hole left behind by his retirement will be filled, but people should be able to relax now. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a bona fide superstar in his own right now and may end up eclipsing the Golden Boy in terms of popularity before his career is said and done.

While nobody ever questioned Mayweather’s masterful skill in the ring, critics often viewed his safety-first style and arrogance with total disdain. Despite being the top man in a pound-for-pound sense in boxing for some time, Floyd Mayweather couldn’t even fill an arena just two years ago. Then came “The World Awaits” promotion associated with his Oscar De La Hoya fight which Mayweather used as leverage for another mega bout with England’s Ricky Hatton last year. His victory in each of these matches combined with his extracurricular activities in the entertainment industry have quickly propelled Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the status of a must see in the sport. Who else can make that claim other than Oscar De La Hoya himself?

Don’t get it twisted though. Mayweather who always plays the role of antagonist in each promotion (even in WrestleMania) is only out for his own fame and fortune. No doubt about that, but he and his manager Leonard Ellerbe have also created a star in boxing which is good for? You guessed it. Boxing! Opponents will now actively seek Mayweather out because he translates into the biggest payday out there. HBO and the promoters are thrilled because he now means big ticket sales and massive pay-per-view buys.

So don’t hate on Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his participation in WrestleMania. It is all part of a careful plan by Mayweather and team to make him a brand that will break the bank in terms of money, and boxing benefits as a result. Just sit back, enjoy the ride and ponder what this man will try next. Maybe a match in mixed martial arts or a stint as a race car driver….who knows? But one thing you can count on is it will be big.

Ultimate Warrior Training With RVD For His Overseas Return


Ultimate Warrior, who is set for an in-ring return against Orlando Jordon for NWE in Spain, will be training for the return on home soil - firstly with Rob Van Dam and possibly Booker T's school in Houston according to PWInsider.com.

Despite negative publicity (which always follows Warrior) it has proved to be quite a big deal in Spain and a Spanish sports channel will be airing NWE shows.

No word on if he'll wrestle again in the US.

Hulk Hogan's Son Sentenced to Eight Months in Jail


CLEARWATER, Fla. — A judge in Florida says the 17-year-old son of wrestler Hulk Hogan should serve eight months in jail for reckless driving.

Nick Bollea was led off to begin his sentence immediately after the ruling Friday afternoon. He will also be on five years of probation and lose his driving privileges for three years.

Authorities say in August, Bollea was racing a friend in his father's sports car when he clipped a curb, spun out of control and slammed into a palm tree.

The impact left his friend, John Graziano, critically injured and in need of lifetime medical care.

Bollea pleaded no contest to the reckless driving charge.

Hulk & Linda In Court Today

Hulk and Linda Hogan appeared in court today in Clearwater, FL. Linda asked the Judge to hold Hulk in contempt for failing to close on a $4.2 million Vegas condo that the two purchased when they were together.

Hulk now wants out of the deal, saying they bought it as a couple but now it serves no purpose, and is willing to lose his $840,000 deposit. Linda says he has to close now whether he wants to or not, likely in a move to get her more assets from the divorce case.
