Aoki Remains in Dream Tournament, Second Round Bout Postponed
Following his win over two-time HERO’S 154-pound tournament champion Gesias “JZ” Calvancanti on April 29, Shinya Aoki announced a rib injury would keep him from competing in the second round of Dream’s Lightweight Grand Prix on May 11. Thought to be out of the tournament, Aoki will instead fight in the second round at Dream.4 on June 15 where he will face Katsuhiko Nagata.
Aoki (15-2, 1 NC) originally faced Calvancanti on March 15, but the bout was ruled a no contest after illegal blows to the back of Aoki’s head prevented him from continuing. The Shooto champion and PRIDE veteran holds wins over former Shooto champion Joachim Hansen, Akira Kikuchi, Jason Black, King of the Cage champion Clay French, The Ultimate Fighter’s George Sotiropolous, and UFC veteran Kuniyoshi Hironaka.
Nagata (4-2) made his debut at K-1 Premium Dynamite 2005!! where he defeated Remigijus Morkevicius. After losing to Yoshihiro Akiyama, Nagata then won two more fights in HERO’S, earning his way into the promotion’s 154-pound tournament. In the opening round of the tournament, however, he lost to Caol Uno. Since then he defeated Artur Oumakhanov to move on to the second round of Dream’s tournament.
Additional Tournament Bouts (scheduled for May 11)
Joachim Hansen vs. Eddie Alvarez
Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Luis “Buscape” Firmino
Mitsuhiro Ishida vs. Caol Uno
