Matt Brown vs. Matt Arroyo @ Season 7 Finale

Postby NWOWolfpack » Wed May 28, 2008 10:40 pm

Matt Brown vs. Matt Arroyo @ Season 7 Finale

It’s another battle of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestants as season six alumnus Matt “No Regard” Arroyo (3-1) is scheduled to face season seven’s Matt Brown (6-6) on The Ultimate Fighter 7 finale at The Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, June 21, 2008, at 9 p.m. ET on SpikeTV.

A lot of the TUF 7 castmembers are no longer with the UFC but it looks like Matt Brown showed that he had what it takes to at least have one fight on the big show. This will be a rematch of an earlier fight in these two fighters’ careers. Brown holds a previous second round TKO victory over Arroyo so these two have a past history.

Dan Cramer’s TUF Blog – Week Eight

JEREMY MAY: MISUNDERSTOOD?
Jeremy May is an ignorant idiot. End of story. From the beginning I
gave him a chance to prove he was a decent guy. And then another chance. And then another. But making prejudiced comments on national TV about someone's religion just put the nail in the coffin. The kid is ignorant. I think he definitely has some serious social problems, but there's no excuse for acting the way he did during our entire time in the house.

TAYLOR VS MAY?
I think Jesse was pretty close to taking him out. If it weren't for the people holding Jesse back, I think he may have followed up his attack. It's a good thing for Jesse's sake that people restrained him because it would have been a shame for him to get kicked off the show for wasting his time beating up Jeremy May. If he had hit Jeremy, Jeremy would have won.

PRE-FIGHT IN THE HOUSE
Being in the house with Tim was no big deal. We practiced so much that the only times we really saw each other was at night. At this point we were pretty good friends, and realized that fighting was what we were there to do and it was nothing more than a competition. We would go out and compete our hardest and afterwards we would be friends again. Really not much more to it. Actually, I think later that night he cooked me a steak dinner (He was probably the best cook in the house). So it kinda played out like this: At 3pm he was tearing the cartilage across my ankle and by 7pm we were sitting around the table eating steak together. Go figure.

THOUGHTS ON THE CREDEUR FIGHT?
I thought my fight against Tim went well up until the point where he caught me in the heel hook. I knew I could compete with him and that I just needed to avoid getting caught. Well, I got caught. Tim was the most experienced guy with the best jiu-jitsu in the house and it showed. He was able to bounce back from losing in the beginning and find a way to land the submission. I've got to give him credit, he is one tough guy. I think my inexperience was exposed a bit in this fight. My original game plan was to keep the fight standing as long as I could, and I was dominating the fight there. Once we got against the cage, my instincts took over and I took him down. I was doing well on the ground with him and mounted him and was gaining confidence and that's where I made my mistake. It's not that I don't think I can hang with Tim on the ground but I knew that was where he had his best chance of catching me in something. So even though I felt confident both on the ground and standing with him, I knew the ground was definitely the more dangerous place to be. In this sport it's all about bringing the fight to where you have a bigger edge and imposing your will on them. On the feet is where I thought I had the best chance of winning that fight. For some reason though, when I got in there I abandoned my game plan a little. I think I took him down three times, and my gameplan was supposed to be to avoid being on the ground. Oops. It’s something I definitely need to work on, and hopefully I'll get better at it with more experience. I'm not gonna sit here and talk about how I think I should have won the fight or anything like that. Tim won that fight and he deserves 100 percent credit. He's worked hard for over a decade at learning jiu-jitsu and MMA and it paid off. He was the better fighter that day. I'll just focus my energy on training hard and trying to make sure something like that doesn't happen again.

POST-FIGHT ADVICE FROM RAMPAGE?
Rampage was very supportive after the fight. He said he was very impressed by my heart throughout the previous five weeks and encouraged me that if I kept working the way I did, I'd have a great career in the UFC. It really meant a lot to me to hear that, especially coming from him. He also said that he thought I could beat Tim if I had the proper amount of time and training partners to train for a guy like him, as opposed to the two days notice we got on the show. I agreed with him. Hearing it from him and believing that he meant it helped me feel a little better about the loss. Not too much better though. I hate to lose and I think the way it affects me when it does happen helps to keep me from losing again in the future. It’s just more motivation to get back in the gym.

DOLLAWAY-YARBROUGH BOUT
CB dominated this fight from start to finish. I think Cale summed it up about right by saying he was outclassed. Either way, I give him credit. He stepped up and fought the
guy that most believed was the best in the house. CB looked great as usual and showed some crisp standup followed by his dominant wrestling and ground-and-pound.

A NIGHT OF FREEDOM AND MAYHEM
Go Kart night was awesome. It's amazing how after five weeks of being stuck in that house, going to a go kart amusement park can literally feel like the most exciting thing you've ever done. I don't know what it was, but something about that night got everyone all riled up. People started drinking and that's when Doom's Day began. Everyone started breaking stuff. It was crazy. I didn't break anything, but I definitely watched... from a distance...(for safety reasons). I wasn't mad about people breaking everything. I didn't really understand breaking a house we had to live in, but not everything can be evaluated on a logical scale when you've been removed from society and your normal life for six weeks and forced to live with 15 cage fighters. I think a lot of the guys were just sick of being stuck in the house for so long and wanted to take out some aggression...on the house itself. Either way, we only had one more week in the house so I just dealt with it. I just had to make sure in the morning when I walked half asleep to the kitchen that I didn't plunge off the balcony.

THOUGHTS ON THE SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS
CB vs. Amir appears to be another good matchup for CB. Amir is predominantly a striker and appeared to be having trouble with Gerald until he landed the knee standing. Perfect matchup for CB, who is the best wrestler in the house. Can't count out Amir though. He was supposed to lose every fight thus far on paper, and just keeps pulling it out. The kid never gives up. Taylor vs Credeur is another interesting matchup. The way I look at it is that it should be a coin flip. I think Tim would have the edge in normal circumstances, but similar to Dante, he has trained with Jesse for the majority of the show. Jiu-Jitsu guys rely a lot on catching their opponents in submissions that they don't expect or don't see coming. Jesse has had the ability to see all of Tim's arsenal and probably can use that to develop a strong game plan. This is a pretty big disadvantage for a guy like Tim, but we'll have to see if he can pull it out. Good matchups though for the semis.
