Sam "The Ram" Spengler is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as EliteXC, Warrior Cup, Strikeforce, Valor Fighting, and the International Cage Fighting Organization.

Darrick: What led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?

Sam: I have always loved to compete. When I started to wrestle at age six, I knew that I'd be good at it. I stuck with it and saw that being a good wrestler can help you do well in MMA. I ended up meeting Cung Le and gave it try.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?

Sam: Train smart, and make sure the people that you are working with are loyal and are looking out for you. You have also got to be dedicated to reach your potential.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Sam: My parents are hands down the two most influential people in my life.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Sam: Knowing that I have the ability to compete in a professional sport.

Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?

Sam: MMA continues to grow. In ten years, it will be a mainstream sport and continue to draw more fans away from boxing.

Darrick: What does a "typical" training session for you consist of?

Sam: Thirty minutes of light drilling, including wrestling and striking. Then, there are three five-minute rounds of sparring, followed by an hour and a half Jiu-Jitsu class.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Sam: I enjoy hanging out with my girlfriend and golfing.

Darrick: What moments in your life have you been proudest of so far?

Sam: Being able to touch the lives of so many kids in a positive way.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Sam: I am a neat freak.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Sam: Winning my first wrestling tournament when I was six. My grandpa was a huge fan and he was still alive to watch.
