SALEM, New Hampshire (August 20, 2009) – The Boston-New York City sports rivalry enters the cage Friday night, September 11 as American Steel Cagefighting (ASC) presents, in association with the Icenter and Bellabance Beverage of Nashua (NH), its second mixed martial arts show, featuring a pair of NABC MMA East Coast Championship fights, at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
Hot, popular prospect Calvin “The Boston Finisher” Kattar (7-0-1) takes on Andrew “New York State of Mind” Montanez (7-10-1) for the vacant NABC MMA East Coast lightweight title (155 lbs.) in the 5-round main event.
Kattar, who now lives in Andover, is a natural athlete and former wrestling star at Methuen High. He took a break from college after one semester and realized he missed the competition he had from wrestling. After watching his sister’s friend, Dave George, in an MMA fight, Calvin immediately decided that he wanted to be an MMA fighter and did so. Now based out of Premier Martial Arts in Derry (NH), Kattar made his pro MMA debut after only six months of training, and now he’s one of the top MMA prospects on the East Coast..
Despite his strong wrestling background, Calvin would prefer to stay on his feet and strike. “I remember feeling after a loss in high school that, if I could have punched my opponent in the face,” Kattar explained, “I would have won. This sport allows me to do that. I prefer to fight on my feet, but I’ve gone to the ground twice, and won by both times by submission.”
“Calvin has the heart, dedication to training and determination to be a world champion,” promoter Sal LoNano, of Tewksbury, commented. “He is the top fighter, MMA or boxing, in the Merrimack Valley area, arguably the best MMA prospect in New England, possibly on the entire East Coast. He can really put on a show. Having him in the main event on our Sept. 11th show is huge for our new company. Calvin Kattar has the whole package to go to the top of the MMA world.”
The 5-round co-main event is an unusual match between two undefeated prospects, Mike Geurin (5-0-0) and Lorenzo Hood (5-0-0), for the vacant NABC MMA East Coast middleweight crown. Geurin-Hood doesn’t figure to go the distance. Geurin has three wins by knockout among his five victories, while the power-striking Hood has stopped all five of his opponents in the opening round.
“We’re excited to be hosting fights in our second show for the first two NABC MMA East Coast titles,” LoNano added. “Both are going to be tough fights. We’re building out promotional company and our goal is to groom fighters to move up to the UFC. We’re showcasing talent, especially New England fighters, so the UFC will recognize them.”
Hometown favorite Tyson “Psycho” Akl, fighting out of Salem (NH), makes his pro debut against middleweight Collin Schrader (1-0-0), while popular welterweight Doug “Flash” Gordon (10-7-0), winner of ASC’s main event fight July 31st at the Icenter, returns to meet Ralph Johnson (2-0-0) in the cage.
Also scheduled to fight on the ASC card against opponents to be determined are unbeaten New York lightweight Pat Audinwood (8-0-1), Worcester featherweight Evan Parker (1-0-0), Manchester welterweight Adam “Lonewolf” McQuaid (1-0-0), and pro debuting Methuen middleweight James Quinlin.

ASC’s marketing ability has already paid dividends for one fighter, Kevin “Shaman” Jordan, who was so impressive in ASC’s first show this past July 31, he has been signed to fight Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo on the September 25th Strikeforce Challengers show in Tulsa.
“We’re excited that our first fight helped Kevin Jordan land a spot on that show,” ASC president Sal LoNano said. “We want to give local fans an entertaining product and also provide our fighters with an opportunity to be noticed and move on and up to UFC and Strikeforce. We’re hoping that fighters on our September 11th show like Calvin Kattar, Mike Geurin, Bellaton Frederic, ‘Tyson’ or any of the other fighters on our show will be discovered. That’s our goal.”

Akl, fighting out of Salem (NH), takes on middleweight Collin Schrader (1-0-0) on the special ASC event, presented in association with the Icenter and Bellabance Beverage of Nashua (NH).
Methuen (MA) prospect Calvin “The Boston Finisher” Kattar (7-1-0) fights Andrew “New York State of Mind” Montanez for the vacant NABC MMA East Coast lightweight title (155 lbs.) in the 5-round main event.
Akl, who was based in Montreal and fought underground there as well as up and down the East Coast, goes by the name of Tyson. He was working out in Taekwondo studio in Lowell when a Muay Thai specialist came in looking for a workout partner. Tyson, who is a Muay Thai fighter and also boxes, quickly dropped the sparring partner with a kick to the head. He immediately jumped up off the mat only to be knocked out from a vicious punch to the head from Tyson. “I was scared,” Akl explained. “He was out cold for about two minutes; I thought I killed him. The guys there said I hit like Tyson. That’s when they started calling me, ‘Tyson,’ who is my idol.”
The 35-year-old Akl is a hometown favorite in Salem (NH), where he plans to soon open a mixed martial arts school. He also had a role in the recently shot movie, “The Fighter,” about boxer “Irish” Micky Ward and his brother, trainer Dicky Eklund. Tyson met Ward and Tyson, along with ASC president Sal LoNano, years ago in a gym where Ward was training to fight Arturo Gatti. “In the movie I play an inmate who gets into an argument with Dicky, played by Christian Bale. We got it on but you’ll have to buy a ticket to the movie to see how it ends up.”
Tyson, representing Team Brickhouse, has already dropped 70 pounds in the last six months to get ready for his comeback bout. “I’m ready,” he explained. “I’m going to see how my body reacts. If I come out of the fight in good shape, I’ll stick with it and keep fighting. Sal is a good friend of mine. ASC has a lot of good connections and Sal knows how to treat fighters. He’s paying fighters good purses, what they deserve because they work hard.”

SALEM, New Hampshire (September 12, 2009) – Red-hot lightweight prospect Calvin “The Boston Finisher” Kattar may not have lived up to his nickname last night, but he captured the NABC MMA East Coast lightweight title by going the distance for the first time in his young pro career, winning a 5-round decision against Andrew “New York State of Mind” Montanezin the American Steel Cagefighting (ASC) main event at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
ASC 2 was presented in association with the Icenter and Bellabance Beverage of Nashua (NH), at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
Kattar (8-1-0), fighting out of Methuen (MA), came out strong, as expected, but Montanez withstood the storm, even winning the opening round on the judges’ scorecards, and ended-up living up to his reputation as a survivor.
Kattar, who had won by knockout or submission in the opening round of each of his previous seven pro wins, won a unanimous 5-round decision for the title.
“It was a great show and a great main event,” promoter Sal LoNano said. “Calvin had a tough fight. I knew it was going to be an exciting fight. I had spent a lot of time with Calvin and knew he was in great shape and I’d heard that Montanez was in top condition, too. Calvin had the advantage after the first round but Montanez came to fight. I’m very, very proud of what ASC has done. We put on great shows and showcased a lot of local talent. Calvin Kattar is one of the best young fighters on the East Coast. I believe he’s going places in this business.”

In a pair of amateur matches, Neil Woodworth (2-0-0) defeated Eric Sunday (1-1-0) by third-round submission, while Jason Earl (1-1-0) stopped John Fiore(0-1-0) in the first round.
