Women’s mixed martial arts pioneer Megumi Fujii on Saturday became the latest fighter to announce her retirement.
Fujii announced that she would fight one more time, at Vale Tudo Japan 3rd on Oct. 5, and then step out of the cage for the final time.
The 39-year-old Fujii has been competing for the better part of the last decade, amassing a 26-2 professional record. Her only two defeats were decision losses to Zoila Gurgel in a Bellator title fight and Jessica Aguilar in a Bellator feature bout.
A black belt in both judo and jiu-jitsu, Fujii dominated the women’s Japanese fight scene throughout her career with her grappling prowess. She was a staple of the Smackgirl, Jewels and Shooto promotions.
She brought a 19-0 record to Bellator in 2010, where she managed to go 3-2, including the only two defeats of her career, and victories over the likes of current Invicta FC champion Carla Esparza.
