10 Questions With Jake Rosholt (by Darrick Patrick)
Jake Rosholt is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Masters Of The Cage, Extreme Fighting League, and High Roller Productions. He was also featured on an episode of the television show TapouT during the second season of the series. At the time of this interview, his next match was scheduled to be against Alessio Sakara but will now be with replacement Dan Miller in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC Fight Night 17: Lauzon vs. Franca on February 7th, 2009.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Jake: I got into mixed martial arts in a little bit different of a way than others. I had wrestled my whole life and that I had come to an end for me. I was coaching a little kids wrestling team in Arlington, Texas. My boss that funded the wrestling program started talking to me about my possible interest in fighting. I told him that I had none. He kept talking to me about it and the more I thought about it, the more I became interested in it. I came out to Vegas for a couple of days, worked out at Xtreme Couture, and just fell in love with it.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Jake: I don't know a whole lot of people in the sport, but I have met many people that are truly great for the sport. I like Forrest Griffin for his work ethic and his love for mixed martial arts. I really like Randy Couture for what he has helped MMA become. I also like fighters like B.J. Penn, St. Pierre, and Anderson Silva for their superior fighting skills.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Dan Miller on February 7th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Jake: I am really excited about the fight - this one should be a great match.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Jake: I would give the advice of just trying your best to get experience along the road that you're on. Whether that be with smoker fights, Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, or just training at a MMA gym. The more you can expose yourself to on the way up, the better off you will be. It is hard to just step in and try to learn everything at once.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Jake: My parents have had the biggest influence on my life. They have taught me to love God, work hard, and to persevere. They are truly great people and I am blessed to have had them behind me in my life.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Jake: I really enjoy getting better at things. Sometimes that is in big strides and at other times it is by doing something small in practice that probably isn't going to get noticed by anyone but me. I just like the challenge of MMA and trying to get better and better all of the time.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Jake: I love to hunt and be outdoors.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Jake: I want to be a steer wrestler when I am done fighting.
Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be?
Jake: To be able to retire at thirty-five, own a shitload of land, and hunt every day.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Jake: I don't know on this question. My memory isn't all that good, so I don't remember that many things from a long way back. I would have to ask my mom about that and I'm sure she would say something embarrasing.
