10 Questions With Cole Miller (by Darrick Patrick)

Cole "Magrino" Miller is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Legends Of Fighting, Absolute Fighting Championships, Shooto, Diesel Fighting Championships, Full Throttle, North American Combat Challenge, International Freestyle Fighting, and Combat Sport Challenge. He also appeared on the fifth season of the television show The Ultimate Fighter. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Junie Browning at UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1st, 2009.

Darrick: What was the path that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Cole: My first encounter with mixed martial arts happened back in 1993 when Royce Gracie showed the world that the smaller guy can win and that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most effective martial art in the world. I played baseball my whole life and never trained any martial arts until I was nineteen years old. At that time, I was also working at a bagel bakery and attending college. One day, a friend of mine came into my work with two black eyes. I asked him about what happened to him and he told me he trained MMA. I was a huge fan, so I knew what that meant and began training. Four months later I had my first MMA fight and I haven't stopped since.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?

Cole: Train as hard as you possibly can, train a lot, and compete as often as possible. Try to do every kind of sport possible - such as boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Also, there will be many people who try to tell you that you won't be able to accomplish your goals. You have to ignore these people or use that as motivation to complete your goals and rub it in their faces. Finally, keep the people who actually support you in your quests close to you. These people are few and far between.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Junie Browning on April 1st. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Cole: Let's go with a "no comment" on this one.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Cole: I guess I'd have to say my friends and family. When you're growing up, it's not like you really have anyone else in your personal life. I was never really involved in martial arts, so I never had an instructor or anything like that to influence me.

Darrick: What personally brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Cole: When I compete in the UFC, take the techniques and principles that I've learned, and am able to apply them on other people who are considered to be on a high level.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Cole: Miguel Torres, Micah Miller, Nate Diaz, B.J. Penn, Nick Diaz, Dustin Hazelett, Murilo Bustamante, Forrest Griffin, Sakuraba, Nogueira, Royce Gracie, and all of my family at ATT. The first in that group of people are mostly lanky fighters who have established themselves in MMA. Of course, ATT helps me grow as a fighter and as a person every day. Without them, I'd be lost.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Cole: Endurance training, Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and martial arts training.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Cole: I despise large groups of people and social interaction.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Cole: Not a good one - I'd rather not talk about it.

Darrick: If you had 24 hours left to live, how would you spend that time?

Cole: Training Jiu-Jitsu!

Thanks - I tend to think Miller will pull out a submission win.
