The man dubbed as “Baby Fedor” has been suspended by the California State Athletic Commission for one year due to a positive test for Stanozol. The CSAC sent out a Press Release today stating Sidelnikov had failed his drug test and confirming the one-year suspension and $2,500 fine.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM M-1 GLOBAL RESPONDING TO NEWS OF
KIRILL SIDELNIKOV'S POSITIVE STEROID TEST

M-1 Global officials first learned that Kirill Sidelnikov failed his post-fight screening for performance enhancing drugs when it was informed late last week by the California State Athletic Commission.

Immediately after the company was notified, an internal investigation was launched. As a part of the investigation, M-1 Global officials spoke with Kirill and asked him to explain his position.

In preparation for his Affliction debut against Paul Buentello in January, Kirill spent some time training outside of the Imperial Team family in St. Petersburg. Kirill indicated that during that time away he began to experience complications from a broken nose that he had recently sustained.

Not wanting to miss any training time leading up to "Day of Reckoning," Kirill followed the advice of a coach not affiliated with M-1 who gave him a nose spray commonly used in Russia to help treat some of his symptoms. It is M-1's belief that the nose spray is what contained the Stanozol.

For those that are skeptical of this explanation, we believe Kirill's account is true based in large part to his physique. If he had been using large amounts of Stanozol on a regular basis, we believe that the frame of his upper body would have contained leaner muscle that had more definition.

While we do not believe the use of a nose spray provided Kirill with an unfair competitive advantage, we are obviously very disappointed in his lapse of judgment. Even though it was only a common nose spray that he used to treat an injury, an athlete must take full responsibility for what he puts into his system at all times. While we are not citing youth as an excuse, we feel we need to offer the public an explanation and we attribute the mistake in part to the fact that Kirill is just 20-years of age.

In spite of our disappointment, Kirill remains a part of the M-1 family and as such, he can continue to count on our support through this turbulent period. While we do not endorse his actions, we stand by him.

M-1 takes full responsibility for Kirill's actions and we respect the decision of the California State Athletic Commission. The organization would also like to make it clear that we do not condone the use of performance enhancing drugs of any kind and we'd like to hereby apologize to the MMA community for Kirill's indiscretion.

M-1 believes that Kirill is one of the top up-and-coming fighters of the sport and after he has served his punishment and is eligible to return, we hope that the public will give him a second chance to prove himself.

- M-1 Global

Finkelstein responds to Kirill's steroid questions and ties to Fedor

http://www.sports.ru/boxing/mma/7166867.html

Can you confirm the info regarding Sidelnkikov's disqualification?

Yes, we were informed by a representative from the California State Athletic Commission that Sidelnikov did not pass the steroid test and that they found Stanosol in his body. I talked to Kirill, and he denies that he is guilty. I am dumbfounded right now... And the results came in so late for some reason, with more than a month after the event... Kirill will be punished either way, but I'm almost sure that the banned substance got into his organism without his knowledge or participation.

In what way and when?

Most likely, Kirill took some substances and did not know, what components they're made of. Perhaps, he took some unfamiliar recovering substances, without hormones. Also, his nose bridge is damaged, he constantly takes some nose drops, to be able to breathe normally. Often times he takes those drops. Maybe that's somehow connected. In any case we will be doing our own investigation. Right now I asked Kirill and his trainers to recall, and gather all the supplements that he took in the recent months, to find out where the roots of this are coming from. Then we will be able to give the official answer to the Americans.

What sanctions is Kirill facing?

Seems like it will be a disqualification for a year, but only for the events in the USA territory.

Sidelnikov is a young athlete, do you think he will be able to handle this news psychologically?

Yes, I'm sure. And besides, this is not an absolute disqualification. He can compete in Russia and Europe. Only in USA there is such a strict control. Seems like he will have no breaks in his career. Of course it's very sad that he just debuted on such high level, Kirill will have to take a step back. Besides, this is also a stain on the reputation of the club, and all Russian fighters.

Is consumption of banned substances a widespread practice in MMA?

Americans, Dutch live on this, they have developed technologies. We are living on our herbs. Guys are sharing something amongst each other; give each other advices; but now we got a precedent. The story with Sidelnikov shows that there is a giant mess in this field. We are now going to implement a strong and strict control. Each fighter will sign a document, that he is forbidden to take any substances without the knowledge of his trainer, even if it's harmless medical drug from running nose or a cold. Otherwise we will be firing from the club immediately.

It is known that Kirill is a constant sparring partner of Fedor Emelianenko, some say a protege. They train together, and communicate all the time. A big shadow can now fall on Fedor's reputation now...

I don't think so. On the contrary, Emelianenko often warns everyone, including Kirill, not to touch any unkown substances. He sometimes advises himself what is the best to take in order to "clean" your body. Besides, Fedor participated in the same event as Kirill, he went through the same testing, that did not show anything.
