10 Questions With Elena Reid (by Darrick Patrick)

Elena "Baby Doll" Reid is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as SuperFights MMA and the International Fighting Organization. She is also a professional boxer with thirty matches on her resume. At the time of this interview, her next scheduled match is against Michelle Waterson at Extreme Beatdown: Meza vs. Schmidt on April 11th, 2009.

Darrick: How did you end up competing in professional mixed martial arts?

Elena: I started out kickboxing twelve years ago and became a professional boxer at the age of eighteen. It was a natural progression to move to MMA.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?

Elena: Do some research and really try to seek out a valid gym. Make sure you have a good team and just have fun.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Michelle Waterson on April 11th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Elena: It will be a good one. I have hung out with Michelle and she is great. She has a stand-up background and has been mainly focusing on her ground game. I'm sure she will try to take me down, but I hope we can bang and make it exciting for the fans.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Elena: I love fighting! It's really neat as an athlete to put both the mental and physical attributes together. You have to use both to be great at mixed martial arts. It's also fun having so much to learn in this sport.

Darrick: Are there any extra struggles being a female in mixed martial arts or do you believe it to be basically the same difficulty for both genders?

Elena: I'm sure that there are, but I don't let it bother me. It does suck sometimes however being so much smaller than everyone else. It can be tough to find people to work with because of my size.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Elena: Randy Couture is a close friend of mine and is true inspiration. He is just the nicest person ever. GSP is also a great guy and such a hard worker who is always getting better. My boyfriend Ray Steinbeiss loves fighting more than anyone I know and will fight anybody. He has the attitude that all fighters should have.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Elena: Family, non-profit organizations, kids, and community. And relaxing! (Laughs)

Darrick: If you had a working time machine, what are some of the points in history that you would visit?

Elena: I would like to meet Jesus and Joan of Arc. I would also spend more time with my late great grandparents and grandma Donna. It would be fun as well to be a princess for a day and check out the rule of Caesar.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Elena: I have a lot of memories from being a child, so I can't pick just one. I had a great childhood.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Elena: As much as I have done and want to do, having a family and children is my ultimate goal. I love success, but I'm most happy with the simple stuff.
