10 Questions With Waylon Kennell (by Darrick Patrick)

Waylon Kennell is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Total Combat, Unleashed Fight, and Galaxy Productions. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Eric Lawson at Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz on April 11th, 2009.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Waylon: Once upon a time, I was in some serious need of direction in my life and I somehow ended up at a Total Combat event. That night while watching the show I thought to myself, as most drunk idiots do, that I could probably do that. A couple of months later I got a membership to the fight club and now I'm living happily ever after.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?

Waylon: It's very fun, it just takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Also, always wear headgear. I hear that cauliflower ear is unattractive.

Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Eric Lawson on April 11th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?

Waylon: I think, "Fuck Yeah!" It's about time I got back into the cage again. Eric is a tough guy and it should be a good time. I just want to go out there, have fun, and try to make it exciting.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Waylon: I respect Pat Speight because if I had to call someone my coach, it would be him. Also, Rick Slaton - look at him, who wouldn't respect that guy? Joe Duarte simply because he is Joe Duarte and Casey Ryan because of his striking good looks. Those are the people who have been there and put a lot of blood and sweat into my training since pretty much the beginning. Thanks, guys.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Waylon: Knowing that I'm doing something positive with my life that I enjoy and also getting punched square in the face to make me realize I'm alive.

Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?

Waylon: MMA - America's new favorite pastime.

Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?

Waylon: I like eating, sitting on the couch, and watching movies.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Waylon: Hmmm...I can't remember exactly.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Waylon: I think I'd prefer to keep people not knowing.

Darrick: What moments in your life have you been proudest of so far?

Waylon: That would be something that falls under the "something people don't know" category.
