10 Questions With Justin Buchholz (by Darrick Patrick)

Justin Buchholz is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, EliteXC, Icon Sport, Rumble On The Rock, and Alaska Fighting Championship. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Terry Etim in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC 99: The Comeback on June 13th, 2009.

Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Justin: That's a good question. Most people who compete are known for fighting in the streets or being great wrestlers. I've been in one real street fight in my life and that was in high school. I boxed at the amateur level and just loved the concept of martial arts, mainly influenced by Bruce Lee. He was a normal person who became a superhero just from learning and I thought that was the baddest shit ever!

Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Justin: The confidence, the rush, the discipline, and pushing myself to places that I never thought I could go.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Terry Etim on June 13th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Justin: I am so excited for this fight! I'm stronger and mentally better than I have ever been in my career. I want that cage door to slam shut so I can shoot across the ring and start whoopin' some butt! I'm also excited to fight in Germany. I've never been there, so I can't wait to check it out.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Justin: Mainly different TV personalities and movie stars.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Justin: Don't fake it 'til you make it. In MMA, a dangerous cancer is effecting our sport and it's spreading like wildfire. That cancer is the MMA poser. Nothing is more annoying than these guys with two MySpace accounts, a website, custom shirts, and a 0-1 record. Fight because you love it and you'll be successful. Prove it in the cage, not online.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Justin: I love Wanderlei Silva - he has always been an idol of mine. I met him and to find out he is a humble, soft-spoken person was just incredible. I also admire GSP and Thiago Alves. Urijah Faber is someone I respect not just for his skills and attributes, but also his mental attitude.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Justin: I really like K-1 and boxing. I don't really watch any other sports on TV, but I enjoy all sports when it's a live event. I also love hiking and being out in the woods or on a beach.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Justin: I wrote a 110-page screenplay and worked on Alaska's North Slope in an oil field for four years.

Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be?

Justin: That question is completely ridiculous! (Laughs)

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Justin: I get punched in the head a lot, so probably the series finale of Seinfeld.
