10 Questions With Nate LaMotte (by Darrick Patrick)
Nate "The Future" LaMotte is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as the International Fight League, Combat Zone, Rumble On The Rez, World Championship Fighting, Full Force Productions, and Reality Fighting. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Doug Gordon in the main event for American Steel Cage Fighting at ASC 1 on July 31st, 2009.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Nate: Well, it's a fairly long story, so I'll just give you the footnotes. My parents were divorced when I was really young and coming from a not very well-off family of seven brothers and sisters, sports were absolutely on the back burner of concerns. I only saw my father on the weekends and that's where Karate at Burgess Studios eventually came in. I trained there since I was about eight years old. I got into quite a bit of trouble in the juvenile system due to a lot of anger issues, so I spent some time away during which I also drifted away from martial arts. When I reached high school, I found wrestling and that in turn reignited my desire for martial arts. I began training mixed martial arts here and there with students from my old dojo and a couple of years later while still doing stupid things I met a person who got my head on straight. Around this time, the very first sanctioned MMA matches in New Hampshire were about to be held. My whole life had revolved around fighting in some way or another and if there was to be a calling for me, this had to be it...and the story continues to this day.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Nate: I led a fairly messed up childhood, so I didn't really have influences until that period in the juvenile system. In one of the places that I was in there was a counciler named Glen who had this saying, "Whenever you find yourself in a bad spot, P.A.C.E. yourself. P.ositive A.ttitude C.hanges E.verything." It's such a corny saying, but it really changed my outlook on things. Other influences in my life were definitely my wrestling coaches. They have made me the person I am in the ring today.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Nate: The best advice I could offer is to train! Untrained toughness will last about forty-five seconds in the ring. Conditioning techniques are the most crucial parts of training. An amateur could finish just about any gassed out professional.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Doug Gordon on July 31st. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Nate: It's going to be a tough fight. Doug is a resilient competitor with great stand-up. He's gone the distance more than a couple of times, so I don't see conditioning as a factor. It should be a great fight for the crowd.
Darrick: Who is someone in the sport that you highly respect?
Nate: I would say Randy Couture - he's the person I think of when I think of mixed martial arts. I have tremendous respect for his ethics, accomplishments, and general personality towards his fans. He's very genuine.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Nate: The quest. The possibilities are endless! There is so much knowledge within martial arts that it is literally impossible to master all of them.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Nate: Outside of mixed martial arts? (Laughs) Like there's any time for anything outside of that! I'm on the grind, man - I have the fever to be a succeeder.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Nate: I was about four years old and we were moving out of our house. I had a baby sister who was four months old and I kept telling her that it was okay that we were moving. I was actually trying to convince myself and to get myself to stop crying.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Nate: I always wanted to be a writer. I published seven poems in high school. (Laughs) I found them online the other day. Kinda' funny.
Darrick: If you had 24 hours left to live, how would you spend that time?
Nate: I'd spend it leaving a mark so big that I'll never be forgotten!
