Put Strikeforce and M-1 Global heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko at the head of the pound-for-pound list, lightweight former champion BJ Penn tells Washington sports station 106.7 FM:
"After my defeat decision the past couple of days ago, I'm not on that list anymore. It's gotta be Fedor. He finishes his guy and how can I argue against him?"
Although he works for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Penn has always been willing to tout non-UFC fighters, even going so far as to call himself a "Kimbo Slice fan" back in the EliteXC days.
Penn has always been his own man, which has led to rows with UFC in the past, notably when he left the company in 2004 and later sued after Zuffa stripped him of the welterweight belt. The lawsuit was settled when Penn returned in 2006.
UFC President Dana White has an "obsession" with signing Emelianenko, yet also scorns the idea of the Russian star as a pound-for-pound top fighter. His recent tirade on the matter made the rounds online.
