10 Questions With Jarrod Card (by Darrick Patrick)

"The Wild Card" Jarrod Card is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Xtreme Fighting Championships, Atlas Fights, Revolution Fight Club, International Sport Combat Federation, Harmful Intent Promotions, Premier X-treme Fighting, Greatest Common Multiple, Reality Combat Championship, Kick Enterprises, World Fighting Championships, In The Cage, and Wild Bill's Fight Night. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Jose Vega in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 22 on June 17th, 2010.

Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Jarrod: I started off with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I also used to do kickboxing and boxing while I was growing up. I used to live in Oklahoma, so I had a lot of friends that were wrestlers. I got into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and have to say MMA was the spin-off from that style.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Jarrod: My parents were the people who mainly influenced me growing up. My dad was in the Army and moved a lot, so my mom was the person that used to drive me all over the place for soccer practice. Now I would have to say that my son influences me to train hard and try to be the best father possible. I cannot wait to start training him.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Jarrod: I live in a Marine Corps town and get asked every day what can they do to compete. All I can tell them is train. If you are die hard wanting to fight, I suggest that you maybe enter a NAGA or Grapplers Quest event. Do the advanced bracket and see if you can win. If not, take your time and just train.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Jose Vega on June 17th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Jarrod: My June 17th fight versus Jose Vega is going to be a great fight. Jose, like myself, happens to be self-trained. I know Jose has a wrestling background, but I don't know if there is anything he can do that I have not seen before.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Jarrod: The most fulfillment for me is receiving the belts and medals from the events that I compete at. I don't fight because it is cool. Fighting to me is like playing chess, you're always trying to checkmate your opponent.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Jarrod: I respect everyone in the sport. MMA is not a huge community, you will run into the same people again. It's better to have friends than enemies.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Jarrod: I love motocross, soccer, choppers, and spending time going out to eat with my son. (Laughs)

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Jarrod: My oldest memory would be of almost cutting my hand off when I was four years old. I was running around an old car that had a broken headlight and the glass sliced me up bad.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Jarrod: I work full-time as a contractor for the Marine Corps at the New River Air Station, train and workout full-time, and I am a single full-time dad.

Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered?

Jarrod: I want people to know me through my son, to me he is the next generation. I also want people to see how I overcame coming from no big schools or camps and was still able to compete with the big dogs in the sport.
