10 Questions With Dom O'Grady (by Darrick Patrick)
Dom "I Hate You So Much" O'Grady is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as King of the Cage, International Fighting Championship, World Cagefighting Alliance, Extreme Challenge, Adrenaline MMA, and Xtreme Fighting Organization. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match was initially intended to be against David Shepherd but will now be against a currently unnamed opponent in King of the Cage at KOTC: Civil War 2 on September 11th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Dom: I love competition and I can't run, throw, or catch. I also don't play well with others, so team sports were out of the question for me. I went as far as I was going to go with Judo, so in reference to mixed martial arts my coach said, "Go and give it a shot."
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Dom: Stop! Go to college. It's a long, rough road to professional MMA competition. Have a secondary plan and be an amateur fighter for as long as you can. Also, practice and become good at one thing in particular. Take a few years and be competitive in one of the martial arts first.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Dom: Igor Yakimov (Sambo), Oleg Taktarov (UFC veteran), and a lot of the Japanese submission wrestlers such as Masakazu Imanari, Shinya Aoki, and Kazushi Sakuraba. I also have a lot of respect for Josh Barnett, Jake Shields, and Jason Miller. Any technical grappler really.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight was supposed to be against David Shepherd on September 11th. Do you currently have a confirmed replacement as an opponent and what are your thoughts about this upcoming event?
Dom: Well, Shepherd is definitely out and I'm not sure who the replacement is, so...I feel good. (Laughs)
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Dom: Training the guys that I train. When they do well, I do well. We all kind of feed off each other.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Dom: My parents were a big influence, for sure. I also got a lot out of movies though. I was a chubby kid that watched a lot of movies. I was going to be Rocky, Van Damme in Kickboxer, or a Power Ranger. I haven't given up on being a Power Ranger.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Dom: Chess and reading biographies. Ha! Yeah, like I can read. I'm all about the fight game. I watch fights, train, and compete in whatever. When I have the time between fights, I watch movies, play pool, and drink. (Smiles)
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Dom: Well, this isn't about me but I have an interesting fact for you. The thing at the end of your shoelaces is called an anglet.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Dom: Since I'm technically at my oldest right now, I'd have to go with answering questions one through eight.
Darrick: If you had superpowers, what would they be?
Dom: The ability to have awesome abs since I've never had them. I think I would get more women. (Laughs)
