10 Questions With Scott Barrett (by Darrick Patrick)
Scott "The Bear" Barrett is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Bellator Fighting Championships, Moosin, Cage Rulers, Renaissance MMA, Xtreme Fighting Championships, Gainesville Extreme Fight Night, Ultimate Cage Fighting, Wild Bill's Fight Night, and Augusta Extreme Fight Night. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Mike Wessel at SportFight X: Middle Tennessee Mayhem on January 29th, 2011.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Scott: I wrestled in college and loved MMA during that time. I still had the itch for competition after college, started training in mixed martial arts, and fell in love with the sport.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Scott: It's a long road full of hard work and sacrifice. Be as well-rounded as possible, don't rely on one thing. It is mixed martial arts. Always be in shape as well. Also, take as many amateur fights as possible.
Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Scott: My dad really influenced me a lot growing up. He was always behind me in whatever I did. I was encouraged by him to give 110 percent into whatever it was I chose to do.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Mike Wessel on January 29th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Scott: Mike has a lot of experience being on The Ultimate Fighter and fighting in the UFC. It's a good challenge for me. I love testing myself and seeing where I'm at. After my last fight, I'm ready to get back in the cage and get this chip off my shoulder.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Scott: Todd Duffee is one of the people. We have trained together for years. His intense training and just the way he has always helped me along my way is very appreciated. Forrest Griffin would be another person for the way he always comes to fight and puts on a show.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Scott: The training and pushing my body to the limits. Seeing what I am made of and going beyond that. That's something Todd pushed in me. Always work hard, then the fight is easy.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Scott: Helping other people. I want to be a counselor of some sort one day. I like listening to people and their problems, in turn helping them get where they want to be in life in whatever it is they're leaning towards.
Darrick: What moment in your life have you been proudest of so far?
Scott: Getting to wrestle in college was a dream come true for me. I think that's every high school athlete's dream. Now my goals are to be the best fighter I can be and eventually start a family. That will be my proudest moment when that happens.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Scott: I'm a huge momma's boy. I have to talk to her at least once a day. I guess I'm kind of a sweet guy, but I can't let too many people know that.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Scott: Getting lost in the woods when I was about nine years old. I was scared to death. I live in the country, so I ended up coming out at the road about two miles from home.
