According to Showdown Entertainment The ongoing saga of Kim Couture, continues to make headlines around the world. The official in her bout vs Sheila Bird seems to have blown it. At 1:33 in to the bout Bird apply's a leg scissors choke to Couture and the referee repositions himself to get a better look at Couture's face, she's now trapped for twelve seconds, Couture's legs go limp at 1:45 seconds and she goes unconscious. Another Six seconds go by and the ref finally steps in and halts the bout. Bird then releases the choke at 1:51. Was the official in question certified to ref an MMA bout. If the answer is No, then the Calgary commission should be taken to task.
Others might blame Bird for not releasing the choke or even Couture for not tapping. Leaving it to the discretion of the fighters doesn't hold weight. Bird was doing her job, and could have let go. Same for Couture don't blame her for having heart. She didn't tap. But what is now surfacing, post the end of the bout, is whether or not Couture should have been allowed to compete at all.
The New Jersey State Athletic Commission has stated she was suspended, and had not satisfied the requirements to have the suspension lifted. Couture has stated she did everything the NJSAC asked of her.
The Calgary Athletic Commission sided with Couture, believing that everything was done to ensure Kim was cleared to fight.
